Fishing Escapes: Creating Unforgettable Moments with Mates
Winter and spring in the Sun Country and North of the Murray region offers more than just crisp and fresh mornings in serene landscapes. It forms the perfect backdrop for memorable fishing adventures with mates. As the mist lifts off the Murray River, the anticipation of the day’s catch brings a unique thrill that only winter and spring fishing can offer.
What’s Biting in Winter
The Murray River and Lake Mulwala are renowned for their diverse fish population, with winter being prime time for targeting some of their most sought-after species:
- Murray Cod: Big Murray Cod remain active in the deep of Lake Mulwala throughout winter, offering anglers a great chance to catch a trophy-sized fish.
- Murray Crayfish: Winter marks the prime time to catch these spiny freshwater delicacies, with the legal season running from 1 June to 31 August in specified stretches of the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers. During this short window, anglers can enjoy the unique experience of targeting one of Australia’s largest freshwater crayfish. Strict catch limits and size restrictions apply, so check the latest regulations before heading out.
- Trout cod: The Murray River is home to Australia’s largest natural population of this rare species. This is a protected species in both NSW and Victoria – possession is prohibited – any Trout cod caught must be returned to the water alive.
To help protect Trout cod during their spawning season, keep in mind that from September to November (inclusive), all fishing methods for any species are paused in the Murray River from Yarrawonga Weir to the Newell Highway bridge at Tocumwal. It’s a great time to explore walking trails, soak up riverside views, or plan your next big catch!
Tackle Tips: Gear Up for Success
To make the most of your winter and spring fishing trip, consider the following tackle suggestions:
- Rods and Reels: A 3-6kg spin outfit is versatile for most bait and lure fishing. For targeting larger Murray cod, opt for heavier gear to handle the fight. A 5-10kg bait caster rod and reel is better suited to casting accurately around the trees and stumps.
- Lures: In winter and spring, large soft plastics, swimbaits, and spinnerbaits are effective, especially when cast into shallow edges where Murray cod feed.
- Bait: Worms, yabbies, and shrimp are excellent natural baits. Ensure any traps used comply with local regulations.

A Standout Freshwater Fishing Destination
Fishing in the Sun Country and North of the Murray region is unique from other parts of the Murray River for a few key reasons.
1. Consistent Water Levels and Conditions
Unlike upstream areas that can experience significant flow variation from dam releases, this stretch of the Murray River (especially around Lake Mulwala and Yarrawonga) benefits from stable water levels year-round, making it more predictable and angler-friendly, especially in winter when conditions elsewhere may be less reliable.
2. Unique Fishing Environments
Our region offers a rare combination of:
- Lake fishing (Lake Mulwala, known as a cod hotspot),
- Slow-moving river sections with deep holes, perfect for cod homes,
- Backwaters and creeks with great structure and cover.
These varying environments, in close proximity to each other, offer an awesome selection of diverse fishing options without needing to travel far.
3. Home to Trophy Murray cod
Lake Mulwala is regarded as one of the best places in Australia to catch a monster Murray cod. Its abundant structure, including snags, standing timber and drop-offs, provides ideal cod habitat, making it a prime destination for those chasing a once-in-a-lifetime catch.
Just be mindful of the fishing seasons. The Murray cod has an annual closed season to protect them during breeding, running from 1 September to 30 November (inclusive) each year. The open season begins 1 December and runs until 31 August. Plan your trip accordingly to fish responsibly and sustainably.
4. Crayfish Season – Winter Foraging Fun
Crayfish season in both Moira Shire and the Federation Council LGA runs from June to August, with strict rules in place to protect the species. Daily bag and possession limits apply and only set legal sizes can be kept. Grab your yabby nets, check the regs, and enjoy a winter forage with friends. It’s a great way to connect with nature, and maybe even score dinner.
5. Great Shore and Boat Access
The region is well-serviced with multiple maintained boat ramps, public reserves, and foreshore parks. Many other stretches of the Murray River are remote or lack easy water access, which can limit the casual or social angler. Here, you can be on the water quickly and easily, even in our smaller towns.
6. Fishing-Friendly Towns
Our region makes it easy to plan a multi-day fishing getaway with everything you need close by. Towns like Yarrawonga Mulwala, Howlong, Cobram-Barooga, Tocumwal and Corowa, all embrace fishing as part of their culture. You’ll find:
- Local bait and tackle shops,
- Boat hire and fishing charters plus,
- Friendly pubs and breweries for post-fishing downtime.
7. Permitted Use of Nets for Bait Collection (with rules)
Unlike some stricter upstream or downstream sections, our region permits the use of bait traps (with a licence and rules), allowing anglers to catch fresh yabbies and shrimp, both are deliciously tempting bait for Murray cod and Yellowbelly.
Please note; any method involving the use of a net or trap, other than a hoop net, landing net or shrimp trap, is prohibited in the whole of the waters of the Murray River and its tributaries, from Yarrawonga Weir downstream to the Newell Highway Bridge at Tocumwal.
